Bonding of Dissimilar Materials
Solid state diffusion bonding or cladding of differing materials is frequently accomplished through Hot Isostatic Pressing, without changing the properties of either material.
The process typically includes near-net capsule manufacture, powder filling, evacuation and then HIP consolidation. For consolidation, the materials are encapsulated in a mild or stainless steel container. Typical combinations are solid material with solid material, powder with solid material and powder with powder. In cladding, thick or thin layers can be applied and high cost materials can be utilized only where necessary.
